How to Apply
The Johns Hopkins Residency program participates in ERAS and interns are selected from medical school graduates through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
House staff appointments extend from July 1 through June 30.
Application Requirements and Deadlines
The ERAS post office opens on September 15, 2012. You may send your application materials to us at any time. Deadline for submission of your application is Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Applications will be reviewed once Dean's letters and transcripts have been received. We require all applicants to submit two interview date choices by email to our program administrator prior to our application review. Please submit your choices as soon as you have completed your application.
We require the following items to be included in your application materials:
- Personal Statement
- Dean's Letter and Transcript
- USMLE Scores (Steps I and II, when available)
- At least three (3) letters of recommendation from faculty members with whom you have worked (Note: We do not require a letter from your Department Chairman)
Please email your two interview date preferences to Melanie Byrd.
Interview Process
During the visit for the required personal interview, we encourage applicants to familiarize themselves with Baltimore and Harriet Lane Service staff. The applicant can discuss details of the service with current house officers and faculty and ask questions.
Our interview is not a test of a candidate's abilities nor is it conducted in that fashion. Emphasis is placed on medical school recommendations, and the interview is principally designed to introduce the applicant to the service and vice versa. Married applicants may wish to bring their spouse when they visit.
Interviews are scheduled on some Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning at 8am with morning rounds, a tour of Johns Hopkins Children's Center, some lunch and conclude at 3p.m.

Scheduling an Interview
Interviews are by invitation only and unfortunately, we cannot guarantee interviews on the dates you request. However, we will do our best to schedule your interview at a time that is convenient for you.
Once we have reviewed Dean's letters, MSPEs, transcript and letters of recommendation, we will invite qualified applicants for an interview with faculty and residents. You will be notified by email if you are invited for an interview. If you receive an invitation to interview, you must call our residency coordinator, Melanie Byrd, to schedule a date and time. Interview dates will not be randomly assigned.
We are fortunate enough to receive many applications. We want to give you our finest attention and to schedule your visit on the date that is most convenient for you.
Therefore, if possible we urge you to submit your application materials prior to October 15th! Applications must be received by the ERAS post office no later than October 31, 2012. We cannot accept applications after that date.
If you have any questions or special requests, please contact Melanie Byrd at (410) 614-4493.
